Co sprawiło, że zostałeś kompozytorem? Opowiedz o swoich pierwszych doświadczeniach z muzyką.
Zadecydował przypadek. Miałem rockandrollową grupę. Siedzieliśmy na krzesłach i próbowaliśmy coś wymyślić. Wtedy okazało się, że jestem jedyny, który potrafi coś stworzyć. Sięganie do źródeł to najstarszy sposób tworzenia – od Strawińskiego do Gershwina; od Bono do Lennona i McCartneya. Zawsze podstawą jest tradycja, z której czerpiesz i próbujesz dołożyć coś swojego. Teraz nie używam już tak dużo elektrycznych gitar, jak w czasach mojego rockandrollowego grania. Stawiam zdecydowanie na sekcję blaszanych instrumentów dętych.
Jak wygląda Twój dzień pracy – czekasz na inspiracje czy każdego dnia komponujesz po parę godzin?
Wiem, że ludzie wyobrażają sobie kompozytora, który siedzi przy fortepianie i czeka, aż przyjdzie wena o wschodzie słońca. Tymczasem rzeczywistość jest zupełnie inna. Jeśli popatrzysz na historie twórców, to przekonasz się, że każdy artysta pracuje po 8 godzin dziennie, jak wszyscy. Talent jest jak tubka pasty do zębów – musisz go mozolnie wyciskać, żeby wyszedł na zewnątrz, a to zabiera czas. Bycie kompozytorem nie daje powodu, by być aroganckim i zadufanym. Jesteś po prostu pracującym człowiekiem.
Wielokrotnie Twoja muzyka była wykorzystywana w filmach, np. Emira Kusturicy – Arizona Dream, Czas Cyganów czy słynny Underground. Czy czujesz się także kompozytorem filmowym?
Szczerze mówiąc, nie czuję się kompozytorem filmowym, chyba nie jestem w tym za dobry. Po prostu miałem szansę pracować przy kilku produkcjach, dlatego że akurat prawdziwy kompozytor filmowy nie był potrzebny.
Myślę, że moja muzyka jest zbyt agresywna i melodyjna. Już od bardzo dawna nie skomponowałem niczego do filmu, ostatni raz napisałem coś chyba 10–15 lat temu. Ale cały czas myślę, że to, co robię, jest jak soundtrack, może ważniejszy niż ścieżki dźwiękowe do filmów. Mam poczucie, że moja muzyka wchodzi w czyjeś prywatne życie. Towarzyszy ludziom w różnych momentach. Kiedy podróżują, bawią się, tańczą albo nic nie robią. Lubię sobie wyobrażać, że moja muzyka to ścieżka dźwiękowa do kadrów, które mamy w naszych głowach. Mogę być kompozytorem muzyki do filmu z życia każdego z was.

To samo dotyczy tekstów piosenek – odkrywasz niepostrzeżenie, że słowa zmierzają w zupełnie innym kierunku, niż zakładałeś na początku. Praca z ludźmi, którzy mają inne wyczucie muzyki, to dla mnie zawsze niezapomniane, uskrzydlające momenty. Powodują powstanie intrygujących, niemal nowych utworów.
